"All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed.
Third, it is accepted as being self-evident."
- Arthur Schopenhauer (1788 - 1860), German philosopher

Triggers of ill-health

The 20-second dip

Not every painful event leaves an emotion scar.  Specific processes need to occur for this to happen, and these depend on your brain-wave activity during the original event

Your brain produces a wide range of electrical signals of various frequencies:
1. Delta brain waves: These occur when you are in very deep sleep, or unconscious, or in  a coma.  They are very slow.
2. Theta brain waves: These occur during normal sleep and are a bit faster.  Theta waves are also produced during moments of intense pleasure and pain and correspond to the unconscious mind.
3. Alpha brain waves: Just before you go to sleep, and just before you wake up, your brain waves are even faster.  Meditation , prayer and relaxed walking alertness also produce alpha waves.  When you are in the frame of mind of being awake but also not aware of time, this correspond to the alpha- wave brain state.
4. Beta brain waves: when you are aware of time and the world around you (sights, smells, touch and sounds), your brain begins to produce faster brain waves.  When you start getting worried, “stressed”, confused or panicked, your brain waves speed up.

A curious event occurs under very stressful situations.  Your brain waves first get faster, but if the distress is severe enough, at the critical point of the event  your brain waves suddenly take a major dip down into theta waves, for about 20 seconds, before returning to the speed of beta waves.  This sudden ‘dip’ in brain waves corresponds to what is commonly understood as going in to shock.

During these 20 seconds of theta wave action, you are affectively deep in your unconscious mind, even though you are apparently wide awake.  Your mind and brain are operating as if you were dreaming or asleep.  People in this state typically have a glazed look in their eyes.
Whatever thoughts and feeling you have during this 20-second dip will not be processed through your conscious, logical, realistic and reasonable mind.  They are literally planted directly into your unconscious mind.  After this you will probably not remember what happened during the 20 seconds.
